Merdeka. Do we need another theme?

Merdeka.

A powerful word and a powerful idea. And one that can be found at the heart of not a few nations.

Idependence. Standing on your own. This was the word, the idea that brought people of different colours, creeds, together over fifty years ago, right here in this land we now know as Malaysia.

In today's paper I read that, "All four Pakatan Rakyat states have agreed to adopt the Coalition's National Day theme of Sebangsa, Senegara, Sejiwa (One Nation, One Country, One Soul). What a load of horse shit!

It's just as bad as the BN's 1Malaysia. The only consolation is that those Pakatan States won't be spending on their themed activities anywhere near what BN has on its themed activites. And that's about the only consolation.

Sebangsa, Senegara, Sejiwa? 1Malaysia?

Halo?? Wake up??!!

What could possibly be stronger, clearer or more meaningful than Merdeka!

Merdeka is already an idea. You need another idea to celebrate that idea? What talking you man??!! Go fire you Ad Agency, Your PR agency etc!

There is nothing, I repeat NOTHING, more powerful or relevant than the idea of Merdeka - Independence.

Except, of course, unless it is the broader idea of BEBAS or freedom which also encompasses the idea of MERDEKA or independence.

Because when you look into it, that is what our forefathers were fighting for when they fought for independence. The freedom to make their own choices.

Here I see political parties and coalitions trying to outdo each other. Either by the themes they come up with or by the mud they try to sling at each other.

History is a great teacher. Read Governor Cavenagh's memoirs.

Governor Cavenagh? You don't know?

What are they teaching in history today?

Governor William Orfeur Cavenagh was governor before Jervois and Andrew Clarke. Anyway, Cavenagh remarked in his memoirs that he did not understand how men who otherwise stood for honesty, justice and truth (I paraphrase here), could end up twisting, exaggerating and completely mangling truth, when they faced each other on opposite sides in Parliament.

What he said then is every bit as true today.

And these people are the ones we have placed our trust in to lead us, and to act on our behalf in our best interests?

Shame on you. You behave worse than kindergarden children.

BEBAS. If you don't like MERDEKA so much that you have to think up new themes, why not BEBAS? Freedom.

Freedom from tyranny. Freedom from lies and corruption. Freedom from nepotism and despotism. Freedom from crime. Freedom from injustice. Freedom from tampering with public votes. Freedom from radioactivity and health hazzards.

For those who have not yet done so, PLEASE read my wall. Click the LYNAS article link and read all of it. ALL of it. Read it slowly. It will show you why, if you do not protest now and have LYNAS shut down BEFORE the general elections, later it may be too late. Then click the other link with the LYNAS facepic badge and show your support. Or if you don't like that, then at least put on a Bersih badge.

BEBAS. Freedom. People have the power. But only if they see it.

The people we elect into government, are just that. People WE elect.

Years ago in the Philippines it was not so much about people wanting Aquino heading the country. It was more that they were sick and tired of the Marcos regime.

THEY THE PEOPLE made it happen there. We the people can make it happen here.

I don't like threats. Do you? But that is what the people WE elect into government, to represent OUR interests, have been doing. Threatening us. I do not know about you, but I think that is just wrong.

We do not need any more themes. We do not need any more ideas. There are none as powerful, short, sweet, succinct as MERDEKA or BEBAS.

This national day, let us celebrate our independence. Let us celebrate our freedom.

Save Bukit Gasing (KL side)! Save Malaysia!

And the unfortunate folk in Bukit Gasing (KL side they say) took out a petition in April to save their hill. Harlow! What talking you ar, BN?

Please support our Petition to PM to Save Bukit Gasing

Save Bukit Kiara! Save Malaysia!

Wei Barisan! Yes! You! If you are so good with hillslope development, why are people up in arms about Bukit Kiara, answer me that? The issue made the front page of The Star Metro (Central) featuring the headline "WALKING FOR KIARA" and sub head "More than 1,000 people showed their commitment towards preserving and safeguarding Bukit Kiara by taking part in a walk to save the hill." Today's paper wor!

Construction works in Bukit Kiara causing much damage to the hill

Compulsory public community service for all would-be politicians!

Now THIS is what I call public service!!! How many of you would like to see ALL our elected representatives perform REAL public service like this? Maybe we should make it compulsory for them to do so? Maybe we should also make it compulsory for anyone wanting to stand for elections in the first place to clock up X number of hours of public service, sort of like how you need to clock up so much air time before you get your pilot's licence? Ooooh, I would so love to see how the wives with their Birkin bags follow their hubbies to go sweep longkangs etc. All in favour say, "AYE" right now!

Service all the way

Thank you Dr Chandra Muzaffar. You are right. What we are concerned about is that our hard-earned tax dollars are not wasted and that real problems get solved!

Thank you Dr Chandra Muzaffar. You are right. We the rakyat really don't care how one group of politicians rubbish another group of politicians. What we are concerned about is that our hard-earned tax dollars are not wasted and that real problems get solved! I don't care if problems are seen to be solved. I want them solved, whether they appear to be or not. Getting rid of corruption and underhanded dealing is the first step but there is so much more to do, not least of which is addressing the problem of poverty. And I think there is waaaaaay too much rural to urban migration. The building of additional residential property and improving infrastructure addresses the symptom not the cause. I want to see more even development across the nation so that rural to urban migration will be deemed unnecessary by the rakyat because they can get good jobs and career development without having to leave their home states the way I had to back in '83. So, whether you are one party or another, be forewarned, you have a whole lot on your plate to deal with. My primary 4 teacher used to tell us, don't trouble the trouble or the trouble will come to trouble you. Those were wise words from a primary school teacher of St. Xavier's Institution, Penang. Learn from them!

Combating corruption beyond party politics

Who is addressing the hillslope issues faced by KL people?

So kind and generous (yes I am being sarcastic) but mummy always said if you cannot mind your own business don't mind other people's business. Before Barisan kindly offers to help solve hillslope development problems in Penang, have you already addressed all the problems faced by people in Damansara Heights or anywhere else in Kuala Lumpur? The Straits Times tells us that KL is gradually becoming ungreen (see NST link below) and is that not a problem for Barisan to mind, before it minds things happening is someone else's jurisdiction? That same report says, "Originally, Bukit Kiara was designated as a public park, but over the years, its land area had diminished. Part of it has now become housing estates." Someone had better have a talk with the National Landscape Department. Would that be you Barisan? Or maybe we should talk about how the local population feels about the Damansara-Shah Alam Highway (DASH) and how that is going to affect their way of life and their property prices especially when they find themselves looking out of their front doors to face a concrete wall holding up a highway the same as those poor folk in Damansara Kim (opposite Tropicana City Mall) who had no idea what was going to hit them when they bought their homes thirty or so odd years ago. How? Still want to kay poh chee other people's business?

Open Burning? Really? Isn't that illegal? What are the police doing?

Whoa! Isn't this illegal? Are the police looking at this and taking action? That's what I want to know. You guys already know by now how I feel about politicians. I think they are the scum of the earth and deserve to be strung up by their toes and left to fester in the hot noon sun with earthworms and other wriggly things stuffed in their armpits! As such, I really don't give a fig what they choose to do to each other. They could blow each other to smithereens for all I care. But when what they do starts to affect me, well, that's where I draw the line. Now, what I want to know is whether or not open burning is illegal. The photo shows diesel being poured but police will have to determine if the paper was actually set alight or not (and diesel burnt like this produces a lot of smoke, correct me if I am wrong), and if so how to bring the miscreants to justice at a time when one of the biggest words many Malaysians shudder to think of is "HAZE." It is bad enough that we are getting that from fires burning in Indonesia (if what we are told is to be believed), but far worse when our own people are doing this here to us. I don't care if Mr Murugan cares or not whether his grandmother's lungs are damaged by his callous actions, but I care whether my lungs are affected. If nothing else, I think he should be made to sit in a closed up room with piped-in carbon monoxide from a car left running outside it! Thank you The Star for highlighting this act which is not only stupid but potentially illegal!! Now, police, do your duty! It IS what WE pay YOU for!
